Single-Origin (2023 Harvest)
This premium, single-origin saffron is sourced from the Herat Province in Afghanistan. The Herat Province provides the best climate to grow saffron and as a nation has been awarded the highest quality saffron of the world.
Those red saffron threads are known as the stigmas of the Crocus Sativus Linnaeus plant. Due to their fragility, they can only be hand-picked. One might ask why saffron is so expensive, and that is because it is an extremely labor-intensive crop. Each Crocus Sativus plant produces about three of the tiny stigma threads. It takes about 210,000 stigmas (about 70,000 blossoms) just to yield a pound of saffron. The Herat saffron has been tested by ISO standards and received a color strength (known as Crocin) of 272. This is the finest quality of saffron you can find on the US market.
Saffron is commonly used in European and Middle-Eastern dishes such as Spanish Paella and Persian Tahdig Rice. Our Herat Saffron is sourced through a small business that has created multiple jobs for farmers and seasonal women employees as well donating to educational charities in the Herat Province of Afghanistan.
